Glimpses into the Past

"It got back to us what you're doing. Think! Think, Kristi. Think about what you're doing! What kind of future are you going to have?!? No one is going to accept you! Neither side! What kind of future will your children have??!"

"I see we can't change your mind on this. Very well. Make your choice. You're seventeen years old. You've just graduated. You've got your whole life ahead of you. If this is what you want, fine. Make your choice now. Either stop seeing him, or pack your stuff and leave today."

That very day I packed my bags and moved on. I don't regret it.

The irony of ironies is that in the end, those grandchildren that were rejected before they were even born ended up being their favorites. The son-in-law that was pushed aside due to narrow-minded thinking was the same one who, through the years, changed their whole perspective on other cultures. He ended up being there for them when their own sons weren't. The daughter/granddaughter that was sent packing ended up being the glue that held the family together in the end.

What they didn't see at the time, they ended up seeing. I'm glad they did or they would have missed out on something really special.

I am very happy to hear that they came around, though I can't imagine the pain you felt all those years ago.

Today in America there is still a lot of racism hiding beneath a thin veil of "political correctness." I've decided to talk about my experiences with this very subject in future posts. Not that this issue defines my life, but it is important, too, and I have learned a thing or two over the years about it. The thing that saddens me the most is that it is the church that remains one of the most segregated groups in America today. Truly, truly, sad.
For now, I just want to say thank you, my blog friends, for your support. :) You're good peeps. ;)

Deb,
That is so kind of you to say. It actually brought tears to my eyes this morning. :)
I'm so glad we have you all in our lives, too! You're a joy!
